The Kardo (Hakardo) is the main street running through the north-south Jerusalem during the Roman period, 2000 years ago.
A Roman road route archaeological excavations took place there after the Six Day War. Today the street is covered shopping center where you can buy souvenirs and especially Judaica items and where you can go directly to the Muslim market.
In the Cardo there is a copy of the Madaba Map, a map of ancient Jerusalem. This is a mosaic map of the 6th century, discovered in the town of Madaba in Transjordan. The whole map depicts the land of Israel, and the most detailed description of the center of Byzantine Jerusalem, the walls, the main streets and churches.
